Why haven't I heard of it before?

Naalbinding was displaced, in the main, by knitting. To be blunt, knitting is simply faster and easier, though, for many things, naalbinding produces a warmer and more durable product. However, naalbinding hung on right up through the 20th century in many parts of the world, and is undergoing a bit of a resurgence in the 21st.
